Exploring Candidasa: A Hidden Gem in Bali

Updated: Oct 27

Situated on Bali's tranquil eastern coast, Candidasa offers a perfect blend of cultural richness, natural beauty, and serene ambiance, far from the more tourist-heavy parts of the island. If you're seeking a peaceful retreat with easy access to some of Bali's most enchanting sites, Candidasa is the place to be. Here's a glimpse into what makes this coastal village so special, along with some must-visit attractions in the surrounding area.

For your stay in Candidasa, we highly recommend Hotel Genggong. This charming beachfront hotel offers stunning views of the ocean from every room, with a backdrop of the mighty Mount Agung on clear days. To the east, you can clearly see Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida, and even catch a glimpse of Lombok when the sky is clear. If you like snorkelling, the protected waters inside the sea wall directly in front of the hotel offer an easy option. We saw rays, turtles, lionfish, clownfish and an array of coral within 150 metres of the gate.

Pro tip - apply high SPF sunscreen often to avoid burning your butt while it's pointing at the sun for hours on end, a mistake I will NEVER make again!

Try this one from Safe Sea - it's reef safe, SPF 50 +, waterproof and has added protection against jellyfish stings, sea lice, and swimmers itch.

The hotel provides a cozy, relaxed atmosphere with modern amenities, a beautiful garden, and a pool that overlooks the sea. The staff are super helpful and really want to make your stay special. The hotel offers onsite spa services with booking, however within a 1-minute walk of the property you will find Pure Silk Spa. Recently opened, the spa is purpose built and the Balinese massage we received here was hands down, the best we've had in 8 years of visiting the island.

Hotel Genggong is an ideal base for exploring the area, offering a peaceful retreat after a day of adventure.

The Lotus Lagoon is also a favorite among locals for evening walks, making it a perfect place to connect with the community.

A 20-minute drive from Candidasa will take you to Tirta Gangga, a royal water palace that exudes the charm of Bali’s regal past. This beautiful site is famous for its tiered fountains, lush gardens, and crystal-clear pools. Visitors can walk across stepping stones that float above the water, surrounded by vibrant koi fish that you can purchase food for. The palace, originally built by the Karangasem royal family, offers insight into Bali's historical grandeur and is an oasis of calm and beauty. To get the most out of your visit, allow a local guide to show you around the complex and share their knowledge with you. If you're into uncrowded photos it would pay to arrive just after opening at 6am.

Further along the coast lies Taman Ujung, another former royal palace with expansive gardens, pools, and pavilions. Built between 1909 and 1921 by the last King of Karangasem, the palace features Balinese and Dutch style architecture. The palace was badly damaged in by both the 1963 Mt Agung eruption, and the 1975 earthquake and neglected in the years that followed. In 1998, renovations began and by 2001 the palace was restored as the attraction it is today. The palace is set against a backdrop of Mount Agung and the Lombok Strait, creating a panoramic view that is simply breathtaking. Taman Ujung is perfect for a relaxed exploration, allowing visitors to appreciate the intricate architecture and the serene surroundings.

Experience Balinese Culture at Tenganan Pegringsingan Village

A visit to the nearby Tenganan Pegringsingan Village offers a unique opportunity to experience Bali’s ancient culture. Candidasa is a gateway to some of Bali's best snorkeling spots, and one of the highlights is a trip to Gili Mimpang, which you can see in front of Hotel Genggong. Team up with a local fisherman, for a boat ride out to these small islets. If you like spearfishing, then Made Jon is your man. You can find him at the Lotus Lagoon, just follow the walk path towards the ocean to where he keeps his boat. He provides guided snorkelling and spearfishing tours and is an amazing freediver. The underwater world here is vibrant, with colorful coral reefs, a variety of tropical fish, turtles, and the occasional sighting of a reef shark.
